Reports of accidents have started coming soon after the inauguration of the Atal Tunnel, which reduced the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 km. There have been three accidents in the last 72 hours due to competing to overtake each other and driving recklessly. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this tunnel as an engineering example on October 3, due to the tunnel named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the journey from Manali to Leh has been reduced by five hours.
Union Sports has Expressed Concern
Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has also expressed concern over the tradition that is flourishing. He wrote on social media platform Facebook, ‘Atal Tunnel is a national asset. The Prime Minister has dedicated it to the nation. Every citizen should discharge their full responsibility in preserving this property and securing the life of themselves and others.
Center of Attraction for Tourists
This grand tunnel has become a center of attraction for tourists. Tourists visiting Himachal Pradesh are also visiting the Atal Tunnel. According to an Outlook report, the Border Roads Organization (BRO) and the district authorities are facing a new problem as the visitors are racing amongst themselves and driving at very high speeds inside the tunnel.
3 Accidents in One Day
The Chief Engineer of the BRO, Brig KP Purushottam said, ‘The Prime Minister inaugurated the tunnel on 3 October and after that, there have been three accidents in one day. Tourists and drivers are flouting traffic rules. They take selfies while driving. ‘ He said that no one is allowed to park the car inside the Atal Tunnel.
Demand for Deployment of Police
Now, there has been a demand for deployment of police on the spot in view of accidents. Kullu SP Gaurav Singh told Outlook that police have taken steps to rein in the reckless drivers. At the same time, the state’s tribal affairs minister, Ram Lal Markanda, has ordered the district administration to take immediate action.
